Neka Kayda Celebrates Her First Birthday: A Milestone for Ghost Wolf Conservation
Colossal Biosciences recently celebrated the first birthday of Neka Kayda, the world's first cloned ghost wolf, marking an exciting milestone in efforts to recover lost genetic diversity in the endangered American red wolf.
Neka Kayda, whose name means "Ghost Daughter" in the Karankawa language, was cloned from a wild female canid discovered in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. Genetic research by our team identified this animal as carrying approximately 70% Red wolf ancestry and several hundred ghost alleles.
Through a partnership involving GCCP, Colossal Biosciences, and conservation collaborators, Neka Kayda and three additional cloned male ghost wolves represent a promising new approach to genetic rescue. Colossal reports that Neka Kayda is thriving, demonstrating the potential of reproductive biotechnology to preserve valuable genetic lineages without removing animals from the wild.
For GCCP, this achievement highlights the conservation importance of ghost wolves and the ancestral red wolf DNA that persists in wild Gulf Coast canids. By combining genomic discovery with cloning technology, we are creating new opportunities to preserve evolutionary diversity and support the long-term recovery of the endangered Red wolf.
Neka Kayda's first birthday is more than a celebration of one remarkable animal, and she represents hope for a future in which genetic variation once thought lost can contribute to species conservation.
