Helping protect Galveston’s ghost wolves
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) recently highlighted its collaboration with our team to protect Galveston Island's genetically unique ghost wolves from vehicle collisions.
Following concerns raised by our team, TxDOT worked with Galveston County officials to analyze wildlife mortality records from 2020–2025 and identify high-risk areas along FM 3005. The effort resulted in the installation of 10 wildlife crossing signs across 19 miles of roadway, completed in March 2026.
These signs raise awareness of Galveston's ghost wolves and encourage motorists to watch for wildlife. The initiative also benefits other island species and promotes safer roads for residents and visitors.
This collaboration demonstrates how scientific research, community advocacy, and government partnerships can translate into meaningful conservation action. While the effectiveness of the signs in reducing collisions remains to be evaluated, their installation represents an important step toward protecting Galveston's unique wildlife and preserving its valuable red wolf genetic legacy.
